Helen Butler

Helen Butler collects fragments of books, magazine pages and photographs, reconfiguring found material to interrupt standardised signs and to question the sensual appeal of certain images. She is interested in how we deem collages to be betrayals of the unconscious, yet asks why our minds often wander to the same conclusions. Helen is intrigued not merely with the individual narratives and connections that can occur, but by the actual process of connecting and the constant search for meaning and patterns.

By letting chance encounters take place, she aims to recreate those states of free association, aimless drifting and endless referrals that reflect ways of seeing shaped by the internet, advertising and printed material. How can we deal with the boundless amount of stimuli the world gives us and how can collage work within a culture in which everything is already a montage?
